My career began in 1982 when I gained a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Civil Engineering.  Following a spell working for a large construction company as a Project Engineer I began renovating houses for customers but found that on my own I was unable to meet the demand. I set up a building contracting firm and progressed to building bespoke homes, extensions, converting attics and farm steadings.

As a skilled self taught craftsman and in order to deliver a high standard of workmanship I ensured that my employees were similarly skilled. I worked with clients helping them make the best project decisions for themselves and developed trusting relationships, many of which have continued to last throughout my career. I am proud that my business flourished through recommendations from many satisfied customers.

In 2007 I took the plunge and embarked on achieving a long held ambition to pursue a career in Structural Engineering. I gained a Masters degree (with distinction) in Civil Engineering, specialising in Structural Engineering from the University of Strathclyde.

Since graduating I have consolidated and further developed my knowledge and skills and thoroughly enjoy combining my practical building and contract management skills with the art and practice of Structural Engineering and Architectural Design.

I am able to offer something different and often better than the “traditional approach” and my experience enables me to often visualise unique cost effective and exciting design opportunities. A typical example of this would be the use of light weight steel in attic conversions to achieve a thinner roof profile where there is restricted height.

Having worked at the “coal face” before becoming a designer can be particularly valuable when delivering your project on time, within budget and with a standard of workmanship you expect.

That said “getting the builders in” is up there with the stress of moving house. Although there are contracts, programmes, technical specifications and so on, based on my experience the most important thing is the relationship you have with people you hire to design and deliver your project. I particularly enjoy developing good relationships with clients and supporting them through what is an exciting but unfortunately at times a stressful process.

As always, please feel free to drop me an email or call me on 0771 308 1597 to talk to me directly if you want to have a chat about your project.
